Abrupt end near for Chicago's mild weather
A cold last half of the week The first Arctic air mass of the season will ride a strong northerly flow out of the Canadian Tundra directly into the western Great Lakes Thursday and Friday. Let's see where this goes.
Don’t let schooling interfere with your education. “Structures do not take to the streets” “It is never structures that make history; it is men.”  - Goldmann Whilst this text starts in a place relatively remote from Chicago, its real focus is on how alternative institution collective learning is more autonomous using the Chicago Freedom School (CFS) as a case point. There is a pleasure...

Moments
There are moments in life that should be treasured. I’m a glass half full person, unless i need a drink, but at the same time I’m being a bit of a half-empty kinda person - which means the glass is equally full as it is empty. But  I need to take the time to remind myself to appreciate these things; to remind myself that the world isn’t all bad. Things like the first bite of a...

the small big city
travelling to the bigger city always make me feel calmer, especially at nite. the city looks more alive and you can see the creations of man with checkered lights that are erected and displayed throughout the nite for the people. the little specs that make the soaring buildings move as if to hold a thousand and two different stories of (probably twice that many) single people living in the world....

Never Let Schooling Interfere with your Education
Historically, industrialisation triggered the end of craft and design that in turn divided the makers from the thinkers.  Modernism allowed this transition.  As a result it made the concept of an arts education complicated. With Modernism ruling the market, a college education dominated this thinking, allowing years of psychological self regard to reaffirm the individual but unfortunately created...

Show Down in Chicago, Put People First! →
We are everyday people – retirees, farmers, workers, homeowners, renters, students, clergy, and small business owners from across the United States. We are coming together in Chicago because there is so much at stake and no time to waste. It is clear that our financial system is a mess and the American people are paying the price for it. Whether it be shrinking pensions, rising foreclosures,...

Cantilevered Milk Crate Storage Bench
Charlie Vinz of Chicago built this cantilevered bench himself for next to nothing. The milk crates provide a storage base and he used 2x4’s from left over from framing his house to mount it all to the wall. The idea’s pretty industrious… And while this particular execution wasn’t done with prettiness as a priority, we could see this exact same idea built with more...

Quick Thought of the day: '"Ghetto" Space'
Through my travels around Chicago, I have really begun to notice a strange use of space within the “lower income” areas.  Houses are left vacant and empty, and boarded up.  And then huge plots of land left unused and in hopeful real estate profit. I have noticed a mere 7 empty plots of land surrounding just a 2 block radius of my house. And I got to thinking. These are places that are...

Few days of CHI
My past few days in Chicago have been ultimately, amazing. Here are some rambles. Firstly, today I went to the AREA advisors meeting. This is the meeting that resembles something that C.A.a.D. puts on. An autonomous discussion of many peoples visions of what AREA could be in the future, and kind of abandoning the reality of what AREA is and it’s immediate needs. Now, I of all people, should...

chicago: the first few days
Chicago.  It is the “windy city” not for reasons that you’d expect - like cuz it’s windy?  It is, but that’s not why it’s called the Windy City - Wikipedia it! The mid-west accents are the accents that you hear on TV. They are soft and understanding. Although, sometimes a lil’ hard to understand. I’m currently finding my feet so I feel real nervous...
